Aquaponics, a system of farming that uses no soil, also uses far less water than traditional agriculture. But while the technique is gaining attention, it remains a very niche way to grow produce due to economic limitations. Special correspondent Cat Wise reports from Half Moon Bay, California.  

Had a few people PM me asking how it's going with the aquaponic system so here's a quick look.. Have sorted out where & what types of beds will be going in to start off with.. Will be working on them tomorrow & hope to have them up & running with plants in by next weekend..  

Cleaned out the grow beds in the aquaponic system the other day to get ready for the big move around.. Is quite amazing the amount of growth 12 fish can support I think.. Also found a few volunteer & fruiting plants which made my day.. Found out the hard way that it's a good idea to protect the IBC grow beds from the sun.. Will be covering them all up with paint or cladding from now on..

Time to clean the radial flow filter in the new aquaponic system so thought I'd bring you along for a look.. Also fitted some "Y" fittings to help increase the flow from the pump to the filter & tanks.. Haven't been able to do much work on the new grow beds due to a dodgy arm so the rest of the build has slowed down a bit.. Do need to get a wriggle on though so I can take advantage of the warmer weather we're now having..  

The 12 Jade Perch have been moved into their new tank & appear not to be too phased by the experience.. Took a bit longer than planned to finish off a few of the lose ends, like the lids & hose work, but am glad this part of the build is all done now.. Next job on the list is to sort out the growing systems we will be using..  

The Aquaponic build is coming along nicely with the majority of the fish side of things sorted.. Next job on the list is to integrate the water from this system into the existing one without shocking the fish too much.. Have made a bit of progress on the aquaponics build so time for another Vlog.. Am fairly sure the pipe work is all sorted out as far as the fish tanks & filters are concerned, so just need to glue them up & have a bit of a wet run.. Time for Vlog number 2 on the new system build.. Decided to up size the pipe work after a helpful word from a mate.. Cheers sir :-) Still looking into trying some other pipes & fittings to see if they will fit n with the current setup..
